Hermod, being a minor character, doesn't really have much of a backstory. We know he is the messenger of the gods for the Asgardians, and that during Ragnarok he is supposed to be the one to try and free Balder from Hel. Seeing as how Ragnarok never came to pass, however, that's not really relevant anymore. Now he just ferries people from place to place or acts as a cameo in some issues.
