How Strong Is Wiki

This is going to be part 1 of a project I'm doing where I go through and calculate most feats from every licensed NES game ever made. Pretty much as just a novelty. In this part I'm going to be calculating the speed of gaming's biggest glass cannon, the Silver Surfer.

Assuming Surfer is as tall as his mainstream counterpart (1.93 m) all we really need to do is measure the time it takes for him to cross the top part of the screen and the distance that encompasses.

We can see that in this video Surfer is around 65 px tall, and the distance he crosses is around 223 px. This means he crossed around 3.43 body lengths, or 6.62 m, in 0.7 seconds. That gives us all the numbers we need for our figure.

v = d/t

  • d = 6.62 m
  • t = 0.7 s

6.62 m/0.7 s = 9.46 m/s

But we don't have to stop there. We can also get the speed of his blasts. Surfer is still 65 px tall in this image, and the distance one of his blasts move is 297 px, which is about 8.82 meters. This takes them 0.2 seconds to cross, leaving just the formula left.

v = d/t

  • d = 8.82 m
  • t = 0.2 s

8.82 m/0.2 s = 44.1 m/s

Result

  • Silver Surfer's Speed - 9.64 m/s
  • Silver Surfer's Blast Speed - 44.1 m/s

Tidbit: Silver Sufer's blast speed is only a bit slower than an arrow, and his flight speed is only slightly slower than Usain Bolt's average speed during his record 100 m race.

Potential Problems With This Calc

  • NES Surfer may not be as tall as 616 Surfer.
